What Is a Janam Patrika? A Simple Guide to Your Vedic Birth Chart

A Janam Patrika — also called a Janam Kundli — is a chart of the sky at the exact moment a person was born. It is not a prediction sheet. It is a map: a record of where the planets stood, drawn in the traditional Vedic format so that an astrologer can read the pattern of a life.

The three details that matter most
A chart can only be as accurate as the birth information behind it. Three details are essential: the date of birth, the time of birth as precisely as it is known, and the place of birth (city, town or village).
Time matters more than most people expect. The ascendant — the sign rising on the eastern horizon — changes roughly every two hours, and it sets the entire house structure of the chart. A difference of even fifteen minutes can shift a planet from one house to another and change how the chart is read.
If the exact time is not known, tell your astrologer honestly rather than guessing. Traditional methods exist for working with an approximate time, but they depend on knowing that the time is approximate.
What the twelve houses represent
The chart is divided into twelve houses, and each house corresponds to an area of life. The first relates to the self, body and temperament. The second to family resources and speech. The fourth to home, mother and inner peace. The seventh to marriage and partnership. The tenth to career and public standing. The eleventh to gains and social circle.
Planets placed in a house, and the planet that rules that house, describe how those areas tend to behave in a person's life — where things flow easily and where effort is repeatedly required.
How a consultation actually works
In a genuine consultation, the astrologer first looks at the ascendant and the overall strength of the chart, then at the running dasha — the planetary period active in your life at present. The dasha explains timing: why a particular phase feels heavy or unusually supportive.
After that comes the conversation. A chart cannot be read usefully without knowing what the person is actually facing — a career decision, a marriage question, a difficult stretch at home. The chart offers perspective; the person supplies the context.
What Jyotish does not claim
Classical Jyotish is a system of understanding tendencies and timing. It does not guarantee outcomes, and no honest astrologer will promise them. Its value lies in helping you see a situation more clearly, prepare for demanding periods, and make decisions with a calmer mind.
